Gardaí examining social media threats against President Michael D. Higgins

Gardaí are examining a range of social media threats against the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins.

A number of people have expressed their criticism of the President on social media after he signed the Health Amendment No. 2 Bill into law.

The Bill limits indoor dining to those who are fully vaccinated.

The hashtag #NotMyPresident was trending on Twitter after the Bill was signed.

An Garda Síochána have confirmed they are examining some social media content which refers to the President.

An Garda Síochána said they do not comment directly on social media content, but that the police force are examining some content online which refers to the President.

They went on to say that any suggestion of violence will be treated as a matter of serious concern and those responsible could be subject to criminal investigation.
