The HSE has said that 90% of the population of Ireland will need to be vaccinated against Covid-19 to reach herd immunity.
Dr. Colm Henry said 9 out of 10 people in the country will need to be inoculated against the virus, raising the prospect of vaccinating children.
Dr. Henry said the National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC) will weigh up the benefits and risks of the mass vaccination of children before any such decision will be made.
Originally, it was believed that 60% to 70% of the population will need to be vaccinated before a society reaches herd immunity.
However, Dr. Henry said that the Delta variant has increased this figure to 90% due to the highly transmissible nature of the variant.
A large amount of research and time will be necessary to weigh up the benefits and risks of vaccinating children against Covid-19.
