The owner of Pantibar ‘Rory O’Neil’ has stated that he will not be reopening his bar for indoor dining until all of his staff are vaccinated against Covid-19.
The 52-year-old spoke on RTÉ radio’s Today with Claire Byrne that he was fully vaccinated, fit and healthy but very few of his staff were fully vaccinated.
Acknowledging that he was fortunate to have sufficient outdoor space to continue his business during the pandemic, O’Neil stated that he understands how some bars were closed for 18 months and cannot provide outdoor services.
He stated that the decision was his and not requested by his staff while saying, “They’re in their 20s, they think they’re going to live forever” and adding, “They’re not concerned, but I feel a responsibility even if they don’t care.”
O’Neil stated that his decision has been met with predominantly positive comments despite some negative comments from what he described as “anti-vax types.”
While stating that he has no time for “the anti-vax crowd”, he stated, “I feel bad for people who cannot avail of the vaccine. If you choose not to get the vaccine then you have to live with the consequences. I don’t want people to come into the bar who have not been vaccinated.”
