Boris Johnson drops plan to skip quarantine after Covid close-contact following public backlash

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Finance Minister Rishi Sunak have been contacted by the NHS test and trace system after being a close-contact with a confirmed Covid-19 case.

The Health Secretary Sajid Javid announced yesterday that he has tested positive for the virus.

Downing Street said earlier that both leading politicians will not be self isolating, but instead take part in a daily contact testing pilot which allows them to continue on essential Government business.

However, following substantial public and political backlash, a spokesperson for the Prime Minister has said Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak will now both self isolate in line with public health guidance.

“He will not be taking part in the testing pilot,” the spokesperson for Johnson said.

“He will continue to conduct meetings with ministers remotely. The Chancellor has also been contacted and will also isolate as required and will not be taking part in the pilot”.
