Covid-19 cases will reach 1,200 today – Donnelly

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has stated that Covid-19 cases will reach 1,200 today.

Donnelly was addressing the Upper House before it passed laws that allow fully vaccinated individuals to dine indoors along with people who have fully recovered from Covid-19 and children under the age of 18.

The new legislation was passed in a roll call vote by 39 votes to seven, which means that it has passed all stages of the Oireachtas.

The legislation, which is an amendment of the 1947 Public Health Act just requires a signature from President Michael D. Higgins before it comes into law.

Donnelly stated that the infection rate for 16 to 18-year-olds is now at the same peak it was at in the October wave.

He added, “Thank God most of them will be fine because of their age, but they won’t all be fine and many of them will get long Covid,”.

In regards to hospital numbers, Donnelly stated that they have doubled in the past three weeks and will continue to rise. He also expects over 200 people in ICU in a few month’s time.
