Northern Ireland will not lift Covid-19 restrictions in line with England on July 19th

The Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland has said the North will not follow England in lifting the majority of Covid-19 restrictions on July 19th.

Michelle O’Neill said that Northern Ireland “will not be following Boris Johnson’s model.”

O’Neill went on to describe Johnson’s planned easing of restrictions as “reckless”.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced yesterday plans to lift the majority of Covid-19 restrictions in England, including the legal requirement to wear face coverings and social distance.

The final easing of restrictions in England is expected to take place on July 19th.

Boris Johnson cautioned at that point there could be upwards of 50,000 daily cases of Covid-19.

However, he championed the vaccination programme and the public’s personal judgement as tools to deal with the incoming wave.
