‘No reason to believe’ Ireland will enter a further lockdown due to Delta variant – Varadkar

Leo Varadkar has said there is ‘no reason to believe’ Ireland will enter another lockdown due to a Covid-19 spike.

The Fine Gael leader said Ireland will enter a fourth wave of the virus, driven by the Delta variant.

He admitted that at the current time Government does not know how long it will last, or how bad it will be.

He said the country will get through a further wave by ramping up vaccinations, keeping restrictions in place and by introducing a vaccination pass for indoor dining.

“There is no reason to believe that we will be forced to go into a fourth lockdown because of the variant,” Varadkar said.

On Tuesday, the Government delayed the reopening of indoor hospitality, and when it reopens will limit access to those who are vaccinated.
