6,577 pregnancy terminations were carried out in Ireland last year

Over 6,500 pregnancy terminations were carried out in the Republic of Ireland last year.

This is a slight drop on the previous year, which saw 6,666 terminations occurring.


The vast majority of the terminations before the 12-week of pregnancy mark, which under Irish law, permits termination without restriction up to three months.

Dublin had 2,414 terminations, Cork had 645, Limerick had 278 and Galway had 274.

36 of the women lived in Northern Ireland, while 8 cases resided outside of Ireland.


The highest number of terminations took place in the month of January, with 709 occurring.
