According to figures from the Department of Health, a total of 75 people left mandatory hotel quarantine without permission within the first three months of the system’s introduction.
A total of 24 people had voluntarily returned after engaging with gardaí, with a number of these people leaving the state immediately after leaving quarantine to which gardaí were notified about.
Since the system’s launch on March 26th last year, a total of 6,825 people have entered mandatory hotel quarantine.
The Department of Health assured that the majority of these people completed their mandatory hotel quarantine without any issues or incidents.
They added that the 75 unauthorised departures accounted for 1% of the total entrants to date.

Since June 18th, there has been over 2,304 appeals made to the Department of Health with only 308 being granted.
People can avoid mandatory hotel quarantine if they are an exempted traveller under the amended Health Act 1947 or if they are vaccinated with a European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved vaccine.
