In parts of England, cases of the Delta Covid-19 variant, first identified in India, are doubling every 4.5 days.
Currently there has been 42,323 confirmed cases of the Delta variant, which is a rise from 29,892 from just last week.
Public Health England said cases remain high across all regions of the country.
Over 39,000 cases are identified in England, 3,035 in Scotland, 184 in Wales and just 43 in Northern Ireland.
Over 90% of new cases being confirmed in England are the Delta variant.
As a result of the new variant, the ‘R’ number for England is now estimated to be between 1.2 and 1.4.
England are currently in the process of racing to get their Covid-19 vaccination programme complete before a third wave emerges.
78% of adults in the UK have received their first Covid-19 vaccine, 55.4% of adults are fully vaccinated.
