Ministers to discuss plans for accelerating vaccinations for under-50s

As the busiest week for the vaccination programme is to take place, Ministers will be discussing the plans to accelerate vaccinations for those under 50.

Minsters have been left with the decision to either speed up the vaccination programme for those under 50 or have hundreds of thousands of unused doses by mid-Summer.

The unused doses will be due to fluctuating delivery times as well as changes to the restrictions on the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

In relation to the idea of parallel vaccinations to different age groups, HSE chief Paul Reid stated that it could potentially create issues as people in the older category are considered to be at a higher risk than those who are younger.

A Cabinet meeting is to take place tomorrow where discussions will take place in relation to how we will hit the target of more than four in five adults receiving or being offered their first dose by next month.
