Four gardaí to be charged as part of corruption investigation

Four gardaí are to be charged as part of an investigation into garda corruption in the south of the country.

The investigation has been ongoing for two years which has so far resulted in the suspension of 11 garda officers. The four gardaí along with a civilian have been charged with perverting the course of justice by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

The investigation began two years ago after it was suspected that information was leaked about a Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) investigation into the activities of a criminal gang operating in Munster.

One of the officers who was arrested and questioned tried to have his suspension lifted after denying any allegations of wrongdoing. After his application was denied by the High Court, the officer subsequently retired which prevented any disciplinary actions against him.

Last year, eight gardaí were suspended, which is the largest amount of suspensions to ever take place in one day.
