Europe will reach herd immunity by August, says BioNTech chief

BioNTech chief executive Ugur Sahin has stated that Europe will reach herd immunity within the next four months.

Experts believe that a level of 70% immunisation would significantly disrupt the transmission of Covid-19 in Europe although the exact threshold remains a matter of debate.

At the latest, we should expect herd immunity by August according to Mr Shahin. The BioNTech shot, more commonly known as the Pfizer shot, makes up a large share of doses administered in Europe and North America.

The efficacy of the vaccine declines after six months from 95% to 91% and it has been suggested that a third shot will be necessary to bring it back to almost 100% again.

There are also suggestions that a booster will be required every year or every 18 months.
