Operations escalate as fire spreads throughout the Mourne Mountains

Operations are being escalated by firefighters as a gorse fire continues to rage through the Mourne Mountains.

The fire, which has been burning since Friday morning, is being tackled by a large number of firefighting resources from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service. Walkers are being advised to avoid the Newcastle side of Slieve Donard while the public is being urged to not gather in the area.

As concerns grow over the possibility of further fires from the current dry conditions Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service stated, “We would ask the public to exercise due care and vigilance in relation to fire safety if out in the countryside during this current dry spell,”.

The operation is expected to be ongoing across Saturday.
