Tánaiste Leo Varadkar questioned over document leaks

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar was questioned by gardaí earlier this month in relation to disclosing a confidential government document to a friend two years ago.

An investigation was launched by gardaí last month in relation to the document, which was an agreement between the State and the Irish Medical Organisation, which Varadkar gave to former President of the National Association of General Practitioners Maitiú Ó Túathail back in April 2019.

Last November, Vardkar addressed the Dáil about what had happened and apologised for “errors of judgement”.

Varakdar voluntarily met with gardaí earlier this month for questioning and has made a full statement according to a spokesperson for Mr Varadkar. Until an investigation is complete, the Tánaiste will not be making any further comment.

This investigation will determine the facts surrounding the incident and will gather evidence to be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) who will then decide if any laws were broken and if criminal charges will proceed.
