Man shot by PSNI following incident in Derry

A man has been shot by the PSNI following an incident in Derry where officers were responding to a report of concern for safety. The incident occurred last night at approximately 10:45pm in Celandine Court in Waterside.

A police officer sustained knife injuries to his arm and head following the incident while a man was shot in his chest by officers after a police firearm was discharged.

Both the officer and the man were hospitalised for their injuries. The man who was shot by police is understood to be in critical condition while the officer has since been released from hospital.

The Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland is investigating the incident and has stated that enquiries are being made to establish what happened.
