Suicide attack targetting Palm Sunday mass in Indonesia leaves 14 injured

At least 14 people have been injured following a suicide bomb attack outside the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral in Makassar in Indonesia.

A Palm Sunday mass service was being carried out at the packed cathedral.

Indonesia had recently been on high alert following the arrest of Jemaah Islamiyah’s leader ‘Zulkarnaen’.

The attack occurred at approximately 10:30am this morning just as the service was coming to an end while one group of churchgoers were exiting with another group entering.

Security guards grew suspicious of two motorcyclists who wanted to enter the church and confronted them as a result. One of the men detonated his explosives at the gate of the church and died which injured four guards and several churchgoers.

Police are continuing to investigate the attack and identify the two attackers involved as well as trying to understand if the attackers were acting independently or were associated with Jemaah Islamiyah.
