The Spanish parliament has legalised euthanasia and assisted suicide for people with serious and incurable diseases, making Spain the fourth country in the EU to legalise the assistance of ending an individual’s life.
The final vote revealed that 202 were in favour of approving the bill with 141 against.
Before it was legal in Spain, anyone who assisted an individual in ending their own life faced a jail sentence of up to 10 years.
The law will come into effect in three months time which will allow for regional control committees to be set up. Euthanasia will be available for all adults in Spain with legal residence.
