Over 2,000 gardaí to be deployed to police St Patrick’s Day protests

A planned protest due to take place on St Patrick’s Day will see the deployment of up to 2,500 gardaí as multiple events have been planned on social media in different locations in Dublin.

The gardaí deployed will range from regular uniform to specialist units such as the Public Order Unit and Air Support Unit.

Gardaí have urged people to stay at home and to not organise large gatherings as over 2,000 people have already been issued fines.

Checkpoints will also be stationed on main roads to ensure that all travel is essential and within the 5km limit.

Some of the locations where the protests are due to take place include the GPO and RTÉ which will require the use of significant garda resources.

Gardaí have assured that enforcement will be the last resort and that they will seek to engage and encourage before stricter actions are taken.
