US President Joe Biden has achieved his first legislative win as the House of Representatives passes his $1.9 trillion Covid relief package.
A predominant party-line vote of 219 to 212 was sent to the Senate where a legislative manoeuver allowed Democrats to pass the bill without Republican support.
Democrats stated that the virus has lead to over 500,000 deaths in America and put millions out of work. As a result, this package has been introduced to pay for vaccines and medical supplies, as well as providing emergency financial aid to households, small businesses and state/local governments.
Republicans have backed past Covid spending but stated that the current package is not necessary, stating that only 9% of it would actually go directly to fighting the virus. House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy described the package as throwing money out without accountability.
However, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated “The American people need to know that their government is there for them,”.
