One garda officer has been hospitalised and three others were injured following a lockdown protest in Dublin today.
A total of 23 people were arrested following the protests. Garda Commissioner Drew Harris stated that gardaí had a planned operation in place for the protests today, some people arrived with violent intent.
Social media footage reveals a firework being thrown by one of the protesters towards a garda officer to which Harris stated, “We are fortunate we did not suffer a serious injury. It was only the member’s quick thinking that saved him” while adding “You don’t carry fireworks to a protest for any other purpose than to engage in violent conduct,”.
Harris stated that a full investigation is to take place and that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
According to Harris, there were a number of groups involved in the demonstrations which included anti-maskers, anti-vaccination groups, anti-lockdown groups and elements of the far-left and far-right.
