Over a four-week period, there have been nearly 800 arrests made in relation to drink-driving offences, with a total of 12,858 breath tests carried out in the same period.
Gardaí stated that the figures for driving under the influence still remained high over the Christmas period despite reduced traffic. Between the 4th of December to the 5th of January, 790 people were arrested for drink-driving offences.
There was also 314 Fixed Charge Notices issued for seatbelt violations, and penalties were given to 1,096 motorists for mobile phone use while driving.
Ten deaths were also reported on the roads during this period which is six less when compared to last year. However, in the year 2020, there were 148 road deaths which is an increase of eight when compared to 2019.
