Leo Varadkar praised for his criticism of NPHET

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has received praise for his criticism of NPHET, condemning their sudden proposal that Level 5 restrictions be imposed to suppress the spread of Covid-19.

Newly disclosed emails from the public revealed that a large majority backed the Tánaiste’s remarks, which were made on RTÉ’s Claire Byrne Live programme in October, that NPHET’s proposal had not been thought through.

The Tánaiste also stated that the leaked advice from Tony Holohan and other members who advised the Level 5 lockdown had blindsided them “to land something like this on a Sunday night, without prior consultation”.

Varadkar added that while NPHET were qualified in health matters, none of them would have faced being on the Pandemic Unemployment Payment or having to tell somebody that they were losing their job.
