Number of people in hospital with Covid-19 continues to rise

With the latest figures showing that as of 8am, 673 patients were being treated for the virus with 75 admissions in the last 24 hours, the number of people in hospital with Covid-19 continues to rise.

This is an increase of almost 100 people when compared to the same time yesterday morning with 581 people hospitalised.

The latest figure of 673 is the highest number of people in hospital with Covid-19 since the 5th of May last year. As of 7:30pm yesterday, there were 56 patients receiving treatment in intensive care units, with 30 of them on ventilators.

The latest high figures can be explained by a backlog of approximately 9,000 cases which is now being cleared. In the past week, there have been artificially low case numbers as the IT system used to notify confirmed cases struggled to cope with huge numbers of positive test results.
