To date, there have been 143 fatalities on Irish roads this year which is 12 more compared to last year’s figures.
The significance of these new figures is that traffic volumes have reduced by approximately 30% this year.
With the Christmas period being a traditionally dangerous time for road users, the RSA has urged people to act responsibly on the roads. Over the last five years, 18 people have died following fatal collisions during the Christmas period.
This warning comes particularly as Covid-19 restrictions which prevent people from leaving their counties have been lifted which will lead to more traffic on the roads.
