People caught in possession of cannabis may not face criminal charge

Anyone who uses cannabis for personal use will not be prosecuted or have a criminal record as they can be dealt with under the adult caution system.

Those who are caught with large amounts of cannabis can still be charged as well as those who are repeatedly caught in possession for personal use.

This is one of the four new offences that has been added to the adult caution system which has been put in place to free up garda and court time.

This is also the first time in the history of the state that illegal drugs can be dealt with outside the conventional justice system.
