Number of drivers who have been caught drug-driving has doubled

Compared to last year’s statistics, drivers who have been caught drug-driving has doubled according to figures released by An Garda Síochána.

New statistics also reveal that the death rate on the roads has increased despite a reduction in traffic.

There were 2,573 people caught driving under the influence of drugs this year which is a 133% increase from last year.

Only last weekend, there were 85 people who were caught drink-driving with 26 people caught drug-driving.

According to Assistant Garda Commissioner Paula Hilman, there have been 136 deaths on the roads this year while adding, “That is eight more than last year in a time when traffic volumes were actually down as much as 70pc during lockdown restrictions,”.
