Cabinet has withdrawn a proposal that would have seen the banning of groups gathering outdoors to drink.
The proposal was originally made in response to large groups drinking in the cities of Cork and Dublin last weekend.
Such a proposal would have sparked outrage as there was a strong resistance against the shutting of pubs that sell takeaway drinks.
Hesitation was expressed towards the notion of fining those who gather in public to drink. The focus at the moment will remain on enforcing existing laws.
