Woman sentenced to life for the murder of ex-husband

Rita O’Driscoll (48) has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her husband Timmy Foley (44) back in 2018.

She was sentenced following a two-week Central Criminal Court trial in Cork.

Rita’s husband Timmy was stabbed 28 times at her brother-in-law’s home in Macroom, to what she insisted was an act of self-defence stating, “He was evil and satanic. He had a black-handled steak knife. He drove it into my head, the side of my head. I put my hand up to save my head. He cut my hand with it. I caught the knife and stabbed him once or twice. He is capable of murder. He is capable of killing. I was afraid for my life.”

Brother-in law Jason Foley was also injured following the incident where he sustained stab wounds to his neck and torso which casued damage to his lungs and kidneys.

A victim impact statement from Timmy’s family read out in court by Detective Sergeant Derek Mulcahy stated, “It took two long years for us to get justice, but no matter what the sentence we will never have closure. Timmy can finally rest in peace. Always loved and never forgotten by your heartbroken family.”
