Irish gangster John Gilligan arrested after police seize the same firearm used in Veronica Guerin murder

Following an investigation into a gang that was sending marijuana and prescription drugs from Spain to Ireland and the UK, former crime boss ‘John Gilligan’ has been arrested by police in Spain.

During the search, which took place at a Costa Blanca commercial premises, a firearm was discovered buried in the garden after it was found by use of a metal detector.

The significance of this discovery is that the firearm in question is the same type that was used in the murder of Sunday Independent journalist ‘Veronica Guerin’.

The gun, which is a Colt Python revolver, will undergo a ballistics test to confirm whether this was the same weapon used in Veronica Guerin’s murder which took place nearly 20 years ago.
