COVID-19: Curfew comes into effect for nearly 20 million people in France

A 9pm to 6am curfew is being enforced in France which will affect up to 20 million people.

The curfew, which came into force at midnight on Friday, will affect the Paris region and eight other large cities.

Permitted activities, such as travelling to work, medical attention, visiting a dependant relative or to walk a dog, will require a certificate.

Failure to comply will result in a €135 fine with repeat offenders facing a possible €3,750 fine. The curfew will be enforced by up to 12,000 police officers and gendarmes.

This measure has received many complaints, particularly from restaurant owners. A Toulouse restaurant manager ‘Gerard’ stated, “Closing at 9pm will have no effect. They’re not attacking it in the right way,”.
