AstraZeneca pauses Covid-19 vaccine trial over safety concern

Trials for a Covid-19 vaccine have been paused by AstraZeneca and Oxford University following a reported side effect in a patient in the UK.

Last night, AstraZeneca stated that the trials have been paused while the company investigates whether the side effect is vaccine-related.

The patient’s condition or the nature of their reaction has not been revealed by AstraZeneca, they have only described it as a “potentially unexplained illness”.

A spokeswoman from the company explained that this was part of a standard review process that occurs if there is a “potential unexplained illness” during trials for a vaccine, and that the patient’s illness could be coincidental.
