Investigation underway after five children found dead in German apartment

An investigation is underway by German police after five children were found dead in an apartment in western Germany.

The mother of the children has been taken into police protection.

According to police, the children were found dead in a private apartment in the Hasseldelle area of Solingen in North Rhine-Westphalia state.

The children, three girls and two boys, were aged one, two, three, six and eight years old.

The Bild daily reported that the grandmother alerted police of the incident and that the mother fled with her 11-year-old son who was later found unharmed.

German media stated that the mother (27) is believed to have attempted suicide at a train station in nearby Dusseldorf and was taken to hospital for treatment afterwards.

An investigation into the incident is still underway by police.
