Storm Ellen leaves 130,000 homes and businesses without power

Storm Ellen has left at least 130,000 homes and businesses without power following a night of heavy rain and damaging winds.

A total of 194,000 premises were left without power at one point.

The south and west of the country was the worst hit area with gusts of 143kph being recorded at Roches Point in Cork at 11pm.

Met √Čireann have now issued two Status Yellow wind and rain warnings.

The rainfall warning has been issued for the entire country and will remain in effect until 5am tomorrow.

The wind warning has been issued for Dublin, Louth, Wicklow, Wexford, Cork, Meath, Kerry and Waterford, this will remain in effect until 5pm tomorrow.

The Road Safety Authority has urged motorists to minimise their journeys and to be aware of potential flooding and debris.
