Body of missing Belfast priest has been recovered from US river

The body of Belfast priest ‘Father Stephen Rooney’ has been recovered from the Detroit river in the US.

This follows a boating accident that occurred on the river last Sunday when Father Rooney went missing.

The body of another man ‘Robert Chiles’ was also recovered from the river.

It is understood that the large speedboat capsized after colliding with a rock under the water.

Father Stephen Rooney was a priest in America for 30 years and was also a pastor at St Joseph’s Parish in Trenton in the Detroit Diocese.

A vigil took place in the Short Strand area of Belfast last night to support his family after they were notified about the news from the US.
