New Zealand Prime Minister delays election following Covid-19 return

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern delayed New Zealand’s looming election by four weeks to 17th October following the recent resurgence of Covid-19 in the country.

Political opponents and coalition partners have been pressuring the PM to postpone the election following Auckland going into lockdown last week.

Ardern said the return of the virus within the community could discourage the people from going to polling stations to cast their votes.

She also acknowledged that issues in campaigning of her political rivals would be greatly hampered, given the main city Auckland is in lockdown.
