Gardaí investigating racially motivated attack that occurred on The Royal Canal

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and information following a racially motivated attack that occurred on The Royal Canal on Friday evening.

Video footage of the incident is circulating on social media which shows a group of boys racially abusing a woman before she is pushed into the canal.

The woman, identified as Xuedan (Shelly) Xiong, stated that one of the boys “looked into my eyes and said ‘coronavirus'”, she was also subject to other racist comments such as “Chinese noodles and fried noodles”.

Following the incident, Ms Xiong stated that she is now worried for her 10-year-old son who attends the local school, she is also very nervous as a result of the incident.

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar stated that “We must do everything we can to support victims of hate crime and stamp out racism”.
