Donald Trump issues ban on TikTok and WeChat in the US

US President Donald Trump has issued a ban on US transactions with ByteDance owned company ‘TikTok’ and Tencent’s ‘WeChat’ as tensions with Beijing escalate.

This follows the Trump administration stating this week that efforts would be increased to ban “untrusted” Chinese apps from the US, TikTok and WeChat were considered “significant threats”.

The executive orders will come into effect in 45 days.

TikTok in particular has come under fire in the US in regards to data collection security concerns.

The orders have been issued under the International Emergency Economic Power’s Act, this law grants permission to the administration to ban US firms/citizens from trading or having financial transactions with sanctioned parties.
