At least 16 dead as plane skids off runway in India

Investigations are ongoing after an Air India passenger jet skidded off a runway at Kozhikode Calicut International Airport located in southern India.

With over 190 passengers on board, at least 16 were killed and 15 were seriously injured.

The death toll includes one of the pilots.

The plane, which left Dubai, landed on the runway in heavy rain, the plane then skidded off the end of the runway and “fell down in the valley and broke down in two pieces” according to aviation regulator DGCA.

According to an Air India Express spokesperson, the aircraft appeared to have overshot the runway.

It was reported by one television channel that there had been a problem with the plane’s landing gear.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
