Southern France fires lead to thousands of evacuations

Forest fires in southern France have lead to approximately 2,700 people being evacuated from eight campsites near the towns of Martigues and Sausset-les-pins.

The fires, which are raging across a vast area near Marseille, have required some 1,800 firefighters to battle them.

Strong winds have caused the fires to spread and destroy over 1,000 hectares of vegetation.

No casualties have been reported yet and material damage still has to be evaluated according to the fire service.

Light winds are expected today which will hopefully help in controlling the blaze.

A second blaze in the region broke out at an industrial park which has lead to a house and several businesses being damaged.
