Robert Broughan (25) has been charged with the murder of 34-year-old Roy Hopkins.
Broughan appeared before Naas District Court in relation to the murder that took place on Friday beside a canal at Glenaree Bridge in Rathangan.
The court heard that Broughan and Hopkins were friends and not enemies and went to the canal together.
Detective Garda Seaumus Doyle said it was alleged that Hopkins was assaulted with a blunt instrument which was identified as a baseball bat.
Wearing a white T-shirt and dark grey tracksuit bottoms, Broughan smiled for most of the hearing and at one point he corrected Detective Doyle on Roy Hopkin’s name stating “His name’s Roy”.
Judge Zaidan granted a psychological assessment of Broughan while in custody at Cloverhill prison.
His next court appearance will be by video link next Thursday.
