‘Zombie’ by The Cranberries becomes the first Irish song to break one billion plays on YouTube

Released in September 1994, ‘Zombie’ by The Cranberries has become the first Irish song to reach one billion plays on YouTube.

The song was written about the 1993 IRA bombing in Warrington and in memory of the two young victims ‘Johnathan Ball’ and ‘Tim Parry’.

This comes just two years after the death of the band’s lead singer ‘Dolores O’Riordan’.

In the last century, only five other songs have reached one billion mark, they are as follows: Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana (1991), Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen (1975), November Rain by Guns N’ Roses (1992), Sweet Child O’ Mine by Guns N’ Roses (1987) and Take On Me by A-ha (1985).
