Firefighters in Ukraine struggling to control forest fires near Chernobyl

Ukrainian firefighters are currently attempting to control forest fires that have broken out near the former Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

In just one week, the blaze has burned through more than 3,000 hectares of land.

Radiation levels have also elevated near the fires.

Firefighting planes as well as helicopters are attempting to control the fires by dropping water on the blaze.

Police stated that the fires broke out after a man set fire to some dry grass near the exclusion zone.

He has been detained by police.
