Irish wrestler receives three-month ban over cannabis

Irish wrestler Peter Newti (21) has received a three-month competition ban after he tested positive for cannabis use.

A sample that was provided, following his victory at the Irish Amateur Wrestling Association Irish Open, tested positive for carboxy-THC.

Newti stated that he understood the violation but also added that the substance was unrelated to his sports performance.

His suspension will be backdated to the 16th of December.

This retrospectively disqualifies him for the Irish Open which also means that his gold medal is forfeit as a result.
