At least 20 dead following citizenship riots in India

Health officials have stated that at least 20 people have died and 189 have been injured following riots in New Delhi.

The riots are in response to the Citizen Amendment Act, this act makes it easier for non-Muslims from three neighbouring Muslim-dominated countries to gain Indian citizenship.

Riots between Muslims and Hindus took place on the streets of the capital which has lead to the deployment of military to the affected parts of the city.

As well as this, a curfew has been called by Delhi’s Chief Minister to be imposed by the government.

The ruling party, Bharatiya Janata Party, has stated that it is not biased towards the Muslim population of the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated “Peace and harmony are central to our ethos. I appeal to my sisters and brothers of Delhi to maintain peace and brotherhood at all times,”.
