Brendan Howlin to step down as Labour Party leader

Brendan Howlin has announced that he will step down as Labour Party leader in the next few weeks.

Labour won six seats in the general election, one fewer than the party had in the last Dáil.

Mr Howlin said he would ask the party’s executive to set a leadership contest in train as soon as possible.

He said that his party had not been given a mandate to form part of the next government, but could influence things from the opposition benches.
