Vatican gathering to debate permitting of married priests

Catholic bishops are gathering in the Vatican today for the start of a three-week meeting which will include discussions on whether to allow married men to become priests.

The development would help to alleviate the shortage of clergymen but has been the focus of a backlash by traditionalist Catholic bishops.

Pope Francis has previously indicated that he is open to the idea.

The German Catholic Church in particular has been seriously debating the subject.
